ANSYS

ANSYS is a Finite Element Analysis software and provides many opportunities in engineering applications.

CD/DVD's of ANSYS software are available for our users. You can get the PC version of the program source from the following address:

ftp://ftp.cc.metu.edu.tr/PackagePrograms/Ansys/

Notice: Users, who would connect to the FTP licensed software site with a browser other than Internet Explorer, shall write ftp://user_name@ftp.cc.metu.edu.tr to the address line. Due to the license agreements that are made, this site is accessible to METU personnel only.

ANSYS  Installation for Windows (XP/ Vista/ Windows 7)

Ansys 12

After running setup.exe in installation DVD or directory please click "Install Required Prerequisites" to install required software components for the setup. Then click "Install Ansys Products" to start the installation, select the components of Ansys you need and proceed.

To set the license server, you can use the license server setting dialog box at the end of the setup, or click (Start -> Programs -> ANSYS 12.0 -> ANSYS Client Licensing) in Windows. By running "Client ANSLIC_ADMIN Utility" window and clicking "Specify The License Server Machine" button you can add items to license server list after clicking "Add Server Machine Specification" :

License server can be entered as (for Hostname 1 ) ccntserver, ccntserver.cc.metu.edu.tr (or 144.122.202.4 (preferred)); flexlm port number is 1056. All other default information should be unchanged.

If there exists some license server information on the list you can edit or modify it by highlighting that line and clicking "Edit Selected Server Machine" and then enter the above settings (144.122.202.4 as server hostname and 1056 as flexlm port number).

To avoid possible acces problems to license server, editing the file hosts  at Windows/system32/drivers/etc/

with notepad and add the following line may be helpfull.

144.122.202.4       ccntserver

Frequently Asked Questions About Ansys

Q: I get a license error when I want to run Workbench or Fluent?

A: To re-set the acedemic license, open User License Preferences following the Start -> Programs -> Ansys12 -> ANSYS Client Licensing menus. In User License Preferences window,  check "Use academic licence" option in "Global Settings" section and click "OK".

Q: Though I have went through all the steps correctly during software installation, when I try to execute the software, it displays a "license manager" error message and it does not operate. What is the problem?
A: Please make sure once again that you went through all the steps in accordance with the explanations provided during software installation. If everything seems okey about the installation procedures, check whether you can see the following line

SERVER=1055@beluga.cc.metu.edu.tr or

SERVER=1056@ccntserver.cc.metu.edu.tr  (for Ansys 12)

in the "ansyslmd.ini" file, which can be found under this path; "C:\Program Files\Ansys Inc\Shared Files\Licensing". If you see a different line in this file, you should change it with the line given above.
Note: Do not forget that, depending on the location that you have installed the software to, this file may have been located under another directory or path.

Q: I have installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 on my computer. The Ansys software, which was running smoothly on the computer before, does not operate anymore. What is the problem I am experiencing?
A: The versions before Ansys software 8.0 are not compatible with Windows XP Service Pack 2. If you are using one of the previous versions of Ansys 8.0 software (versions before 8.0), you should remove that version and start using Ansys 8.0 or later. Or, you should remove the Service Pack 2.

Q: Before the software starts to operate, it displays a message telling that the license of the software shall expire in a few days. Will I be able to use the software after the next few days?
A: The softwares' licence expiry dates are being monitored and taken care of by Computer Center. The licenses of the software are renewed on a regular basis. Therefore, unless stated otherwise by the announcements, you will not experience a problem about the expiry dates of the licenses.

Q: I am running out of disc space because of the files that are automatically created whenever I run the software and/or the output files that I myself have created, can you increase my quota limits?
A: We have created a directory named "/temp" on central servers systems (such as beluga, orca, narwhal, rorqual, tasman); so that our users can execute and work with oversize files without experiencing disc space problems. By creating another directory within the "/temp" folder, you can carry out tasks and perform your operations. To create another directory within "/temp" folder, use the following command: "mkdir directory_name". You should be mindful of the fact that other users may also need space within this folder; so, after you are done with your work, do not forget to delete all the files you have created in the folder.

Q: I want to use the software from outside METU. How can I do it?
A: METU is bound by the restrictions which are arranged and specified expressly in the terms of software license agreements. According to these agreements, the licensed software can only be used solely for academic purposes and strictly within the boundaries of METU. It is expressly forbidden to use the software from outside METU.
