Dial-up Internet Connection Procedure - Linux Systems

You can establish Internet connection on Linux operating systems by using external modems.

PPP support should be provided on the kernel to be able to establish dial-up connection. In the next step, you have to know how to establish a connection with a modem.  As you know the serial port is named as COM1 in DOS and similar operating systems; however it is named as /dev/ttyS0 in Linux operating systems and COM2 is accessible as /dev/ttyS1. After determining which port modem is attached to, you can organize the configuration files in /etc/ppp directory and establish a connection with pppd command.

On a graphical interface you can easily establish dial-up connection with kppp program. You can run Kppp program by entering the kppp command on the command line or by using the menu/shortcut options.

Unless a configuration task is carried out before, start a configuration process with Setup option.

On configuration page, Dial-up connection accounts, hardware, modem and other options are available. To open a new account, click on New button.

Wizard option allows you to use connection settings which are automatically specified by the system. However, these default settings will not be useful, if connection settings are to be specific to your system. To customize the configuration settings, select Dialog setup option.

In the Connection Name field, you can enter a single connection names you'd like. The telephone numbers of the connection should be added to the phone number field with the Add button. The Authentication option should be Terminal-based since, on METU systems, the users are to enter their user names and passwords through a terminal window. The connection option should be entered according to the type of the protocols that the other Internet providers use (PAP, CAP etc.).  No information on IP and Gateway tabs of the menu should be entered. The information assigned by the server system should be used as default.

On DNS tab of the menu, enter cc.metu.edu.tr for the "Domain Name" field; then enter 144.122.199.90 and 144.122.199.20 for the "DNS servers" field.

On Kppp configuration menu, enter the modem connection port on Device tab. To check whether the system has found the modem or not, click Query Modem under the Modem tab.

The connection can be established after the configuration is completed.

Terminal based user login name and user password information which is defined on METU systems should be entered.

After logging onto the system, enter ppp in the METU field.

As a last step, click Continue button to establish the connection.

After logging onto the system, entering the ipconfig command will enable you to view information about connection and the speed of the connection on a graphical interface.

As an alternative, you can also use redhat-config-network program which is available on RedHat 7.3 operating system or, linuxconf program or you can use wv-dial programs at the command line.
