Campus Backbone Network METUNET

Middle East Technical University's Campus Technical Infrastructure is comprised of a number of departmental networks and various sizes of multi-user hosts connected around a campus-wide backbone network. At the core of campus technical infrastructure, there is this backbone network which is referred as "METU-NET Backbone". METU-NET has been installed in 1990 with 16 connection points, and expanded to 60 connectio points in 1998.

The previous Token ring backbone technology is cancelled in 2000 and a new infrastructure based on ATM technology was installed. This backbone was used till 2004 when the new back backbone based on gigabit technology took its place. Currently, all departments in the campus are connected to the new Gigabit Backbone. In this link, you can view a scheme of METU-NET Fiber Optic Network Infrastructure.

Each departmental network is comprised of a collection of multi-user and/or single user systems that are connected to a departmental Local Area Network. This departmental LAN is in turn connected to the backbone via ethernet switches with Gigabit uplinks. METU Computer Center (METUCC) has the full responsibility and control over the backbone network (METU-NET). Departments' technical staff operates departmental LANs and METU CC provides technical consultation upon request. You can see the list of department administrative/technical coordinators from this link.

The commonly accepted and supported protocol for the communication of the computers within the METU campus technical infrastructure described above (over the METU-NET) is IP (Internet Protocol).

Internet Access From Outside the Campus: The Internet connection capacities of METU are listed as follows:

Line Capacity
ULAKNET 400 Mbps - Ethernet
Superonline (backup) 100 Mbps -Ethernet
Total 400 Mbps
Northern Cyprus Campus - MetroEthernet 16 Mbps
Mersin Institute of Marine Sciences - MetroEthernet 10 Mbps

You can view the information about the status of Internet connections from outside the campus and their statistics from the address http://lines.metu.edu.tr*.

Dial-up Network Connection: There are currently one modem line open to both METU personnel and students that aim to provide them with Internet access from outside campus through dial-up network connection.

Tel.Number Bandwidth Number of Lines Type User
210 43 00 33.6 Kb/s 12 Analog Personnel/Student

Our users can use all of these lines with their user codes and passwords. The information about dial-up networking can be found on this link
