There are several licensed Microsoft Products avaliable for METU campus including operating systems, office applications and development tools. These licensed software of Microsoft are listed below:
(*) A regularly updated version of Microsoft XP Professional installation CD, prepared by METU-CC in which Service Packs and recent Windows updates released after these Service Packs are integrated. The installation with this special CD includes the automatic installation of Anti-virus, Anti-spyware software and utilities like Acrobat Reader. To search within the different versions of Microsoft Products, to and reserve CD/DVD before borrowing them from METU-CC Software Library; you can use the following web page: http://cclibrary.metu.edu.tr. To borrow reserved software media, you should visit Room 109 in METU-CC building. We recommend our users to download software from our ftp site using the addresses: ftp://ftp.cc.metu.edu.tr/OperatingSystems/ ftp://ftp.cc.metu.edu.tr/PackagePrograms/Microsoft/ Windows 7 Windows 7 operating system is available in Turkish and English languages with 32 and 64 bit versions. Installation DVD's can be created by downloading appropiate DVD .iso files from ftp://ftp.cc.metu.edu.tr/OperatingSystems/Windows7/ and burning them into a blank DVD ROM. For standart use; 32 bit Windows 7 (Turkish or English) should be downloaded and installed. To burn the .iso files into a DVD, img_burn.exe may be downloaded from the same location and installed. For borrowing Windows installation DVD from METU-CC Software Library, users should search and reserve the software using http://cclibrary.metu.edu.tr. To borrow reserved software media, you should visit Room 109 in METU-CC building. Windows 7 Activation: There is no product key or serial for Windows 7 activation in METU. Instead, Windows 7 should be connected to network (at least for once) and be validated by the activation server within 30 days after installation. After that, the computer with Windows 7 can be used outside METU campus or used without any internet/network connection for six months. After first activation is completed and activation server is set for once, system will renew its activation automatically within each six months. For activation Command prompt window should be opened in "administrator mode". For this; selecting Start -> All Programs -> Accessories menus and right clicking on the icon of application "Command Prompt" and clicking "Run as administrator" is required. As an alternative way; cmd.exe can be located in system32 folder at C:\Windows\System32 and then can be run in "Run as administrator" mode by right clicking the cmd.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator". The following command should be entered after the command line window, ("Command Prompt" black screen) appears: slmgr /skms kms.cc.metu.edu.tr:1688 (or you can try slmgr /skms 144.122.202.5:1688) After hitting return key, the dialog window telling that command has been processed should be closed by clicking "OK". Then slmgr -ato command should be entered. It may last for 20 seconds to a dialog window saying that Windows is activated successfully. Windows 7 activation problems:1. Please try the IP address of the activation server (skms 144.122.202.5:1688 ) instead of the host name (skms kms.cc.metu.edu.tr:1688) for the activation command. 2- Please check the date and time of Windows 7 and after correcting them repeat the activation process in case of any inaccuracy.3- Install all the critical Windows updates and then repeat the activation process. 4- After activating Windows 7 successfully, some error messages like, "This copy of Windows is not genuine" or "Activation Required" may be received (usually after a few months). In this case steps and commands above should be repeated. During the execution of these commands any third-party firewall and security software should be disabled. For the automatic extension of 6 months activation period by the operating system, third party firewall and security software should be configured to allow traffic from the port 1688. Other Microsoft Windows Operating Systems In the ftp.cc site, ISO images of the DVD and CD's of most of Microsoft software including the following operating systems, are available. Note: Users who would prefer to download software installation directories from our FTP site for licensed sowftware by simple copy/paste commands, should use ftp client software or (for Windows users) copy the following address ftp://user_name@ftp.cc.metu.edu.tr to address bar of any open window of the operating system ("user_name" should be substituted by user's actual username) and hit enter, type their passwords to the login window. Browsers like Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox function as ftp clients, allow single file transfers but cannot download a directory with the files and subdirectories contained in it. Due to the license agreements, this site is accessible to METU personnel only. Microsoft Dreamspark Microsoft Corporation has started a program called DreamSpark by which several MS development software are made available for university students for free, including METU. For more information about the program please see https://downloads.channel8.msdn.com. METU students who will prefer to use DreamSpark program to download software, can click the following link to log onto the authentication page, using their METU user codes and passwords to verify that they are METU students, they will be forwarded to DreamSpark portal. In this page they will be requested to provide a Windows Live id and password (usually Msn messenger or Hotmail e-mail accounts works for this). Solution: For any version of Office go to the ftp://ftp.cc.metu.edu.tr/PackagePrograms/Microsoft and find the "multi language pack turkish" directory in the directory of that Office version. In some cases CD / DVD image file (iso) should be downloaded instead of a directory and setup.exe should be run to add Turkish language support.
